Accepted Formats for Audio Cassette Tape Repair

There are numerous formats that fall under the umbrella of cassette tape repair, and while we cannot provide repair services for all of the different formats, we do provide those services for the following types:

Standard Audio Cassette Repair - The standard audio cassette, also known as the Compact Cassette, has been used for years to record music. These tapes were also popular for personal recorders and dictation, and were a popular audio format from the 70's to the 90's. We often see reel separation, stretching, cut tape and broken shells with this media type.

Microcassette Tape Repair - Microcassettes use the same magnetic tape as standard cassettes but in a much smaller unit and is often thinner. Commonly used in answering machines and for dictation, the tape often breaks from frequent use. Repair can help you prevent the loss of important information and voice recordings.

Mini Cassette Tape Repair - Designed specifically for dictation and often used by professionals (legal, academic, medical), mini cassette tapes can suffer wear and tear from repeated use. Sometimes it is best not only to have the tape fixed but to also use our audio transfer services for a more permanent and easily accessible copy.

Elcaset Tape Repair – Combining the technology of the Compact Cassette and reel-to-reel tapes, the larger and bulkier Elcaset, with bigger tape, is a format that is rarely supported or repaired. If you happen to have a damaged Elcaset we do offer tape repair services for these rare tapes. However, unlike with other types of cassette tapes, we have to charge extra for Elcaset parts when needed. Availability of Elcasets and accessories is very limited which causes a rise in cost for the replacement parts.

MICROCASSETTES WANTED
(held together with screws rather than glue)

Because of the lack of consumer interest, the manufacture of microcassettes is at an all time low and all microcassettes being sold today are glued together rather than held together with screws.

Please look at your microcassette tapes to see if any have four screw heads showing on one side of the shell. We are looking to buy new or used microcassettes from anyone who has any to sell – whether just one or one hundred.

Other Repair Services

We provide a variety of other repair and audio recovery services beyond just simple audio cassette tape repair.

Compact Disc Repair - Including CD's, DVD's and game console discs including GameCube. We're able to repair the surface of both mini and standard sized discs to eliminate scratches and other surface anomalies that cause skipping and read errors. Note that we do not repair Blu-Ray or PlayStation 3 discs.

Tape Cleaning - With tape recordings, there may sometimes be a buildup of dust and other contaminants which can affect the sound quality. To improve the frequency response lost due to the grit and dust, cleaning the tape with a special tape cleaning fabric may be warranted.

Tape Baking - For a period of time beginning in the 1970s many tape manufacturers used a different formula for their audio tapes not realizing there was a serious problem with it. Over time, these tapes experience a breakdown in the binder that holds the oxide to the plastic tape base. This is usually referred to as sticky shed syndrome. In mild cases this will result in a squealing sound when playing the tape. Check your tape heads and rollers for a waxy residue. If you notice your tape slowing down and possibly stopping, the tape probably has a more severe case of sticky shed syndrome. In the worst cases the layers of tape will have bonded together making it impossible for you to play the tape.

Once you realize that your tape is suffering from sticky shed syndrome, do not play or rewind the tape. You can make it impossible to recover the information on the tape.

Tape baking is a temporary solution to remove the humidity that has built up over time. Although temporary, once the tape has been heat treated, there should be enough time to transfer your tape to a newer format. After a number of days or weeks the baked tape will again give way to the syndrome and no longer be playable.

Audio Transfer and Transcription - At times, the damage to tape can be severe enough that we recommend transfer services in addition to cassette repair. Many of our clients choose to opt for audio transfer services because of severe damage or the desire to move the data to a more modern medium. In cases like these we offer professional audio transfer services as well as transcription of the recording to supplement our audio cassette repair services.

If you have a recording in Spanish, we also offer Spanish transcription and translation services.
